In 2023, Placemake was appointed by Rutland County Council to prepare a strategic review of the county’s public realm.
The most rural county in England, Rutland has a special sense of place - its settlements retain a traditional vernacular and the landscape is rich in diversity, from gently rolling hills with ancient woodland to deep river valleys.
At the same time, there is constant pressure to deliver new homes, economic opportunities and infrastructure for local residents and businesses.
With this in mind, the strategy provides a guide for the use and treatment of public open space in a manner that compliments Rutland’s unique character and identity.
Following the completion of the study, last year, Placemake was engaged to prepare place shaping strategies for the two main centres of Oakham and Uppingham, thereby enabling the application of county-wide objectives to particular places and spaces.
