Stevenage Old Town,
Hertfordshire

Despite being less than 0.5 kilometres apart, pedestrian and cycle connectivity between the train station and the Old Town is limited.

This is because the 'new' and 'old' towns remain separated by a busy dual carriageway and while one side reflects a new and modern age, the other has retained a traditional core and character.

This study, a private initiative by the practice, considered the potential to strengthen a route from Bowling Green at the northern end of the High Street to the clock tower at heart of the new town.

It suggests that with a little catalyst investment for public realm improvements and a holistic approach, the potential exists to knit together new and old town heritage as the basis for a more sustainable and diverse town centre offering.

The study was presented to Stevenage Borough Council in 2020 for consideration.
