‘To linger! If we could but linger again in those places whose beauties never wane; surely we would then be able to endure many difficult hours with a lighter heart, and carry on, thus strengthened, in the eternal struggle of this existence’
Camillo Sitte, Artistic Principles of City Planning, 1889
On the advent of the Placemake study trip to Brugges, it would appear an appropriate time to include a quote by Camillo Sitte;
‘To linger! If we could but linger again in those places whose beauties never wane; surely we would then be able to endure many difficult hours with a lighter heart, and carry on, thus strengthened, in the eternal struggle of this existence’
In his seminal text, The Artistic Principles of City Planning from 1889, Sitte uses the streets and plazas of Brugges as a case study to illustrate the artistic principles of urban design.
Images from the study trip will be posted on return!
