about us

our aim is simple: to make better places and spaces for the people that inhabit them

PlacemakePlacemakePlacemake

Placemake is an independent team of architects, urban designers and built environment consultants based in Hitchin, Hertfordshire and working across the UK and internationally.

Since our formation in 2013, we have been involved in a wide variety of projects from spatial planning, strategy and guidance through to bespoke building and urban design. Occupying sites of between 0.5 and 2,000 plus hectares, we are delighted that many of these have been realised or are at varying stages of delivery and implementation.

Placemake is an RIBA Chartered Practice and an Urban Design Group (UK) Registered Practice. For more information about us, a previous study or how we might support a particular project, please contact us.

approach

we understand that every place is different - in character, scale and function

PlacemakePlacemakePlacemake

Placemaking happens at all scales, from regional plans and town centre strategies to the most micro of spaces between buildings. Often involving complex challenges with interrelated components, the practice was formed to provide a place-led, integrated and environmentally responsive approach, whether the focus is a single building or a mixed-use development.

We also appreciate that every place is unique with its own characteristics, constraints and opportunities.

As a result, no two projects are ever the same and in the ten years that we have been operating, this is reflected in the diversity of our experience, which spans from six homes in a conservation area to regeneration, tourist resorts and waterfront development. Underpinning each of these is a passion for places and the wellbeing of those that inhabit them.

Since its formation in 2013, the practice has grown steadily and now comprises of a core team of built environment consultants working from bases in Hitchin, London and internationally.

Given the multi-disciplinary nature of our projects we often collaborate with other specialist practices and local consultants where a site is overseas.

The practice was formed by David Edwards in 2013, who previously held senior roles at prominent design studios and multinational engineering consultants.

What is the 15-minute city (and what is it not)?

Full disclosure from the outset: before writing this, my understanding of the 15-minute city was limited. From what I had heard and read, I assumed it to be a hybrid of existing ideas, principally compact cities, transit-orientated development and localism coupled with the general good practice of planning around walking distances.

Once it broke into mainstream media, I knew I had to investigate further but then the conspiracy theories began circulating and suddenly it was no longer a new way of living but a mechanism for civil repression.
